If you care for someone, you are entitled to support in your own right. A Carer’s Assessment is a free assessment carried out by your local council to understand how caring affects your life and what support could help you continue caring safely and sustainably.Â
Many carers feel unsure or anxious about assessments, or don’t realise they’re entitled to one at all. At Leicester Carers Support Service, we can help you understand the process, prepare for it, and make sure your voice is heard.Â
A Carer’s Assessment looks at your needs as a carer, not the needs of the person you care for. It’s your opportunity to talk about how caring affects your health, wellbeing, work, relationships and everyday life.Â
After the assessment, the council will decide whether you’re eligible for support. This could include practical help with caring, equipment to make things easier, or support to give you a break from caring.Â
Even if you’re not eligible for funded support, the assessment can still provide useful advice, information and recognition of your caring role.Â
Preparing for a Carer’s Assessment can make a big difference. We can help you think through what to say, what’s important to mention, and how to explain the impact caring has on your life.Â
Before your assessment, we can talk with you about things like how well you’re sleeping, whether caring affects your physical or mental health, and whether you’re able to take time for yourself. We can also help you reflect on how caring fits around work, education, family responsibilities, and your ability to socialise or enjoy hobbies.Â
Many carers find it hard to talk about their own needs. We’ll support you to be honest, confident and clear, so the assessment truly reflects your situation.Â
To request a Carer’s Assessment, you’ll need to contact Leicester City Council’s adult social care team. This can usually be done through the council’s website or by calling them on 0116 454 1004Â
If the council charges for some carer support services, they may also carry out a financial assessment to see whether you’re entitled to help with the costs. We can explain what this means and help you understand what to expect.Â
If you’re unsure who to contact or how to ask, we can guide you through the process.Â
Assessments can feel complicated and emotional, especially if you’re already under pressure. We’re here to support you before, during and after the process to help you understand your rights and feel more confident asking for the support you deserve.Â
If you’d like help with a Carer’s Assessment, or just want to talk it through, you’re very welcome to drop in and speak to us.Â
